Postdoc position – XCHEM code


16/10/2017 – A 1,5 years postdoc position is available in the group of Prof. Fernando Martin. The position shall be co-financed by the H2020 program of the European Union (ERC-2017 PoC-GA 780284).

The successful applicant shall work in the improvement and optimizaton of XCHEM code (https://www.xchem.uam.es/xchem/).

The CAMPUS  group at the Chemistry Department of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid is focused on the theoretical study of the dynamics in isolated quantum systems (from the smallest to medium-sized systems, or extended ones) and the development of state-of-the-art theoretical tools which can help us to understand their properties and predict their behavior.

We seek for a post-doctoral researcher with a strong background in atomic, molecular, optical physics and attosecond physics.

Starting date: Expected start date is November, 2017.

Remuneration: Gross annual salary (before applying national income taxes and social security contributions) amounts to roughly 2.344 €/month.

Eligibility criteria: Applicants must:

  • Hold a PhD in Theoretical/Computational Physics, Computational Chemistry or Informatics.
  • Have experience and knowledge on atomic, molecular and optical physics and attosecond physics. Publications and/or presentations to relevant congresses in the area will be positively evaluated.
  • Have good knowledge of English

Selection Criteria: The selection will be made on the basis of demonstrated knowledge in the following fields:

  1. Computational physics/chemistry methodologies and techniques,
  2. Theoretical atomic and molecular physics / Quantum Chemistry,
  3. Programming skills and code development (Fortran, C/C++, python, scripting languages, Linux/Unix, etc),
  4. Knowledge on parallelization and optimization of codes (MPI, openMP, etc),
  5. Handling of codes which are commonly used in the area of interest,
  6. Previous experience in any of the areas of interest.

PhD position on new graphene-based materials

CampuS research group (https://campusys.qui.uam.es/) at the Universidad Autonoma de Madird is seeking for a doctoral candidate to develop a research project on computational modelling of new graphene-based materials, and the study of physico-chemical properties, such as mechanical and magnetic properties and the interaction with light.

The successful applicant shall receive specific training in the research area. Access to vast technological resources will be provided through the European HPC Network and Spanish Supercomputing Network. Collaborations with top (theoretical and experimental) research groups in AMO Physics and Condensed Matter across the world are foreseen.

Scholarship details: The position shall be funded by the 2017 FPI doctoral fellowship programme funded by Spanish Government (MINECO), closing on October 18. The fellowship shall cover a 4-years doctoral employment contract and a top up contribution to cover tuition fees and short research stays. Participation in international conferences will also be funded.

The research group: The researcher hired will be supervised by Fernando Martín García and supported by the senior researchers who make up his work team. Previous studies in this line of research in which the research group has been involved have resulted in remarkable results, especially those related to the magnetic properties of organic materials grown in graphene (see Nature Phys 9, 368 (2013) (DOI: 10.1038 / nphys2610) and the atomic processes on surfaces (see Chem Soc. Specific call requirements: Prospect candidates must have a BSc in physics or chemistry and a post graduate specialization degree with at least 60 ECTS (e.g. MSc) in Physics or Chemical Physics; good knowledge of at least one programming language (Fortran 90, C, C++, Python, etc.); knowledge of quantum mechanics, electronic structure methods, molecular dynamics or simulation of periodic systems; fluent English; enthusiasm for learning and commitment to teamwork. Other competences as knowledge of scripting languages, graphical programs and numerical libraries, or experience using simulation packages may also taken into account.

Phd Position on Theoretical Attosecond Electron Dynamics


CampuS research group at the Universidad Autonoma de Madird (https://campusys.qui.uam.es/) offers the possibility to develop a research project on Theoretical Attosecond Electron Dynamics, oriented to obtain a PhD diploma, to theoretically investigate the coupled electron and nuclear dynamics induced by attosecond laser pulses and strong electromagnetic fields on small and mid-size molecules, as well as in solids.

The successful applicant shall perform novel theoretical developments and contribute to the implementation of highly parallelized computational tools, access vast technological resources through the European HP Computing Network, and will collaborate with top (theoretical and experimental) research groups in Atomic Molecular and Optical Physics across the world.

Scholarship details: The fellowship shall cover a 4-years doctoral employment contract and a top up contribution to cover tuition fees and short research stays. The thesis project shall be linked to a nationally funded project with enough resources to cover the participation in international conferences relevant to the research area.

The research group: CampuS theoretical group, led by Prof. Fernando Martín, focuses its research on (i) the theoretical and computational modeling of photoexcitation and photoionization processes in atomic and molecular systems induced by synchrotron radiation and ultrashort laser pulses with femto- and attosecond duration, and (ii) the study and theoretical prediction of properties of materials and nano-objects of complex molecular systems, aggregates and fullerenes, isolated or deposited on metallic and nonmetallic surfaces. This, in close collaboration with prestigious Spanish and international experimental groups.
The quality of the group is reflected by the number and quality of publications in the last ten years: more than 200 papers, among which 3 in Science, 2 in Nature, 1 Chemical Reviews, 1 in Nature Physics, 2 in Nature Chemistry, 1 in Nature Photonics, 2 in Nature Communications, 4 in Proc. of National Academy of Sciences, 1 in NanoLetters, 1 in ACS Nano, 2 in Angewandte Chemie, etc. In 2000, Fernando Martín was awarded the National Research Prize Rey Juan Carlos I, in 2010, the prize of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry in Chemical Physics and in 2011, the Advanced Grant from the European Research Council XCHEM.

Specific call requirements:

Prospect candidates must have (by September 2017) a Bachelor degree in Physics or Chemistry and a post graduate specialization degree (e.g. MSc) in Physics or Chemical Physics; good knowledge of at least one programming language (Fortran 90, C, C++, Python, etc.); knowledge of quantum mechanics, basic electrodynamics, basic atomic, molecular and optical physics; scattering theory and numerical methods; Fluent English; enthusiasm for learning and commitment to teamwork. We will positively value any additional skills in the areas of mathematics, physics and chemistry which are relevant to the offered position.

Expressions of interest to apply for a MSCA Individual Fellowship


The CampuS theoretical group (http://www.xchem.uam.es/), at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) is seeking for expressions of interest to apply for an individual MSCA Fellowship. Deadline to apply for the 2017 open call is September, 14th.

Talented, enthusiastic young researchers are welcome to join this leading group to develop a project in the framework of the research areas described below but going beyond the current state of the art.
The hosting Institution (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) guarantees enough computational resources to carry out the project through its Computing Center and one of the most powerful High Performance Computing (HPC) facilities in Europe, HPC-Europa, through the Mare Nostrum Barcelona Supercomputing Center.

In particular, the XChem project aims at developing theoretical approaches and computational tools for time-resolving and controlling (i) molecular autoionization in the presence of ultra-fast vibrational motion, (ii) attosecond charge migration dynamics in molecules upon ionization, (iii) coupled electron-nuclear dynamics during non-adiabatic transitions, with emphasis on the role of electronic coherence created prior or during the transition, and (iv) chemical reactivity. The XChem project is currently funded by the European Research Council (ERC Advanced Grant n° 290853).

Several positions on Theoretical Attosecond Electron Dynamics

15/06/2017 – The Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain) offers several short-term positions (from 2 to 12 months contract) directed to young researchers with less than five years of experience on research. Porsitions shall start by september/october 2017.

Post-doc position at CampuS theoretical group


16/01/2017 – A two-years postdoc position is available in the group of Prof. Fernando Martin. The position shall be co-financed by the European Social Fund[1] under the 2016 call for the recruitment of post-doctoral researchers of the Madrid region (more details here).

The successful applicant shall develop an open project which aims to develop computational tools either for the description of ionization processes (for complex molecules, surfaces or nanostructures), the description of heterogeneous catalysis or materials synthesis. The tools obtained should be prepared to run efficiently in HPC facilities and set ready for end users.

The CAMPUS  group at the Chemistry Department of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid is focused on the theoretical study of the dynamics in isolated quantum systems (from the smallest to medium-sized systems, or extended ones) and the development of state-of-the-art theoretical tools which can help us to understand their properties and predict their behavior.

We seek for a post-doctoral researcher with a strong background in any of the group research lines  (laser-matter interaction, surfaces or clusters) who complies with the set of restrictions listed below.

12/12/2016 – A short term postdoc position for an experienced researcher is available to work on coupled electron and nuclear dynamics induced by attosecond laser pulses and strong electromagnetic fields on small and mid-size molecules .

The applicants should hold a PhD in Chemical Physics and at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience. A strong and demonstrable background in  atomic, molecular and optical physics, attosecond physics, scattering theory, numerical methods, and programming is also required. 

Remuneration: Gross salary per month shall be 2.085 € (before applying national taxes and social security contributions)

The two-months postdoc position should start as soon as possible and, in any case, not later than January 16, 2017

PhD position funded by la Caixa and H2020 MSCA programme


We offer the possibility to develop a research project on Theoretical Attosecond Electron Dynamics, oriented to obtain a PhD diploma, to theoretically investigate the coupled electron and nuclear dynamics induced by attosecond laser pulses and strong electromagnetic fields on small and mid-size molecules, as well as in solids.banner-inphinit-v2-animado

The position shall be funded by the doctoral fellowship programme INPhINIT, which is devoted to attract international Early-Stage Researchers (ESR) to top Spanish research centres. INPhINIT is promoted by the “la Caixa” Foundation and relies on the European Commission’s support through the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions – COFUND programme.

The fellowship shall cover a 3-year doctoral employment contract with good remuneration conditions (gross salary 26.000 € per year) in comparison with the standard of living in Spain, and a top up contribution for training and networking activities. Researchers shall complement their training with a variety of transnational, intersectoral and interdisciplinary activities.
In addition, phd candidates may opt to a price amounting to 7.500 € if they got the diploma earlier than 6 months after the finalization of the contract.
