Pre-doctoral position on modelling of attosecond time scale processes

A two-year pre-doctoral position is available under the supervision of Dr. Alicia Palacios at CampuS group (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid). The position is co-funded by the ESF[i] under the 2017 call for the recruitment of pre-doctoral researchers of the Madrid region (more details here).

The successful applicant shall develop an open project that aims to study ionization processes in molecules, as well as in other complex systems, or its environment. The researcher will learn to use the appropriate computational tools for the description of these processes and to interpret the results, with the aim of giving explanations to experiments currently carried out in huge scientific infrastructures.

CampuS theoretical group is focused on the study of the dynamics in isolated quantum systems (from the smallest to medium-sized systems, or extended ones) and the development of state-of-the-art theoretical tools that can help us to understand their properties and predict their behavior.

We seek for a pre-doctoral researcher with a good background in Quantum Physics, Atomic and Molecular Physics, programming skills and commitment to teamwork, who wish to start a thesis project in any of the group research lines (laser-matter interaction, surfaces or clusters). Candidates should also comply with the set of restrictions imposed by the funders (see below).

Start date: By March 1st, 2018.

Remuneration: Gross annual salary (before applying national income taxes and social security contributions) amounts to roughly 18.800 €. Researchers may receive additional funding to support the expenses derived from research missions and the attendance to conferences.

Eligibility criteria: According to the specific call restrictions, applicants must:

  • hold a Bachelor in Physics, Chemistry or related areas (for degrees obtained in a foreign university, homologation is required). Any postgraduate or specialization studies will also be taken into consideration.
  • be registered in the National Youth Guarantee system or be in a position to be a beneficiary of the system (be a national of the EU, EEA or Switzerland or meet the conditions to work in Spain, have less than 30 years and be unemployed). For more information, please, check: http://www.empleo.gob.es/es/garantiajuvenil/accesoJovenes.html).
  • be registered in any locality within the Madrid Community from July 10, 2017.

Application procedure: Applicants should send, before February 8, 2018:

  • a motivation letter,
  • a detailed CV and contact information of two referees,
  • a copy of the Bachelor degree (and, where applicable, homologation credential), and other courses taken, and a certificate on the marks obtained,
  • a proof of all the eligibility requirements described above (for the National Youth Guarantee system, the applicant should be in a position to beneficiary of the said system at the time of recruitment).

Please, send all the documents in a single pdf file named as the candidate (e.g. SURNAME_NAME.pdf) to beatriz..

Upon evaluation of the applications received, selected candidates shall be contacted for an interview. Recommendation letters could be requested to referees during the selection process.

PhD positions funded by La Caixa

CampuS theoretical group offers mentorship in four different research topics to international students who wish to develop a research project,  oriented to obtain a PhD diploma, at the Condensed Matter Physics Center (IFIMAC-UAM) and at IMDEA-Nanoscience (Fundación IMDEA-Nanociencia).

The PhD positions are funded by the doctoral fellowship programme INPhINIT, which is devoted to attract international Early-Stage Researchers (ESR) to top Spanish excellent research centres. INPhINIT is promoted by the “la Caixa” Foundation and relies on the European Commission’s support through the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions – COFUND programme.

The fellowship shall cover a 3-year doctoral employment contract, a top up contribution for other training expenses, and complementary training on transversal skills. In addition, phd candidates may opt to a price amounting to 7.500 € if they got the diploma earlier than 6 months after the finalization of the contract.

For more information on the fellowship programme, please visit: www.inphinitlacaixa.org. Deadline for application is February 1st, 2018.

For more information on the research topics, check the documents below:

  • Theoretical Attosecond Electron Dynamics: from biomolecules to solids (IMDEA-Nanociencia) – Description
  • Ultrafast molecular dynamics induced by attosecond pulses (IFIMAC-UAM) – Description
  • Chemical-physics properties of new 2D materials (IMDEA-Nanociencia) – Description
  • Graphene-based materials: Exploring new physical properties based on theoretical simulations (IFIMAC-UAM) – Description

In case you are interested in this fellowship, you should check the fullfillment of the excellence criteria and other specific call requirements (research experience, training, language and mobility requirements) here.

Students with spanish nationality not fullfilling the mobility requirements can apply to a fellowship to carry out a doctorate at a Spanish University. The deadline to apply is February 27, 2018. Mor information here.

For any question on the research projects or if you became selected for the face-to-face evaluation stage, please, do not doubt to contact the group projects manager beatriz..

Job opportunities at CampuS theoretical group

CampuS theoretical group, led by Prof. Fernando Martín, belongs to the Department of Chemistry of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Its research mainly focuses on (i) the theoretical and computational modeling of photoexcitation and photoionization processes in atomic and molecular systems induced by synchrotron radiation and ultrashort laser pulses with femto- and attosecond duration, and (ii) the study and theoretical prediction of properties of materials and nano-objects of complex molecular systems, aggregates and fullerenes, isolated or deposited on metallic and nonmetallic surfaces. This, in close collaboration with prestigious Spanish and international experimental groups.

The quality of the group is reflected by the number and quality of publications in the last ten years: more than 200 papers, among which 3 in Science, 2 in Nature, 1 Chemical Reviews, 1 in Nature Physics, 2 in Nature Chemistry, 1 in Nature Photonics, 2 in Nature Communications, 4 in Proc. of National Academy of Sciences, 1 in NanoLetters, 1 in ACS Nano, 2 in Angewandte Chemie, etc. In 2000, Fernando Martín was awarded the National Research Prize Rey Juan Carlos I, in 2010, the prize of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry in Chemical Physics, in 2011, the Advanced Grant from the European Research Council XCHEM, and in 2017 the King Jaime I Prize in Basic Research.

CampuS research group (https://campusys.qui.uam.es/) at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid is continuously seeking for excellent researchers at predoctoral and postdoctoral level. If you have a mature interest in any of the research topics described above, we invite you to send us an expression of interest including your CV and motivation letter, briefly describing your research profile and the research project you would like to develop in our group.

If your profile fits our group, we will look for a convenient funding source and provide assistance with any administrative issue. Besides the group funding sources, different programs at National and European level may allow excellent researchers to develop a career path in the group, as summarized in the document developed by FECYT “Researcher career path in Spain at a glance”.

For any question you may have do not doubt to contact beatriz..
